Tutoring for neurodivergent learners

One-to-one English tutoring for children, teens and adults who are autistic, have ADHD or anxiety, or have other additional needs, from a tutor with training in psychology and clinical mental health counseling.

A tutor who understands how you think

Neurodivergent students are often bright, curious and capable, and often let down by teaching that wasn't designed for them. Some lose the thread halfway down a page. Some need to know exactly what is coming next. Some freeze when asked to write. Some have simply decided they're "bad at English."

I hold a degree in psychology and I'm completing a master's in clinical mental health counseling. That training means I notice what's getting in the way, whether it's attention, sensory load, anxiety, motivation or confidence, and I adjust the lesson instead of pushing harder.

I work with children and teens, usually alongside their parents, and with adults who want support with reading, writing or communication on their own terms.

Who I work with

  • Autistic children, teens and adults
  • Students with ADHD
  • Students with anxiety, including anxiety around school work or speaking
  • Students with other learning differences or additional needs
  • Students who have fallen behind or lost confidence

What lessons can include

  • Reading engagement and comprehension
  • Writing, from short low-pressure warm-ups to organized essays
  • Grammar, spelling and vocabulary, in context
  • Conversation and expressing ideas out loud
  • School English work and set texts

How I adapt lessons

Every learner is different, so these are principles rather than a fixed program.

Predictable structure

Each session follows a familiar shape, so the student knows what is coming and can spend their energy on learning.

Short, varied tasks

Activities change before attention runs out, moving between writing, reading and talking.

Interests as the way in

We use the student's own interests, whatever they are, to build engagement before difficulty.

Low pressure, high expectations

Mistakes are expected and safe. I keep the standard high and the stakes low.

Pacing and length that fit

Standard lessons are 50 minutes, but shorter or differently paced sessions can be arranged.

Families kept informed

Parents receive a written summary of what we did, how the student responded, and what's next.

Jeffrey was well prepared and did a great job of drawing on my son's interests and keeping him engaged throughout the lesson. My son looks forward to the next class each time. It's important to have a teacher who really connects with the student, not just gives lessons. My son and I are happy to have found Jeffrey as his English teacher.

For parents: Before you book, please make sure your child knows about the lessons and wants to take part. Students who choose to be there make real progress; students signed up without being asked usually don't. Talking it through together first makes all the difference. A parent or guardian also needs to be present for the first lesson. The lesson stays focused on the student, but it's a chance for you to see how I work and share anything I should know.

Lessons are English tutoring, not therapy, counseling or diagnosis. My training in psychology and counseling shapes how I teach. I work alongside a student's school, doctors and specialists, never instead of them.
